Memories, good cause win at Classic

September 5, 2008
Jim Meehan

It's a safe bet that few of the participants or the 3,182 in attendance will remember the final score of Thursday's Spokane All-Americans Charity Classic at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

For the record, it was the Blue team with a 142-141 victory over the White. (That's not actually correct because the White team received about a 20-point boost at the start of the fourth quarter to make it interesting.)

For the memory banks, it was 6-foot-11 ex-Gonzaga center Richard Fox leading the fast break and firing a no-look, left-handed pass to former Eastern Washington standout Rodney Stuckey for an easy hoop. And Fox following that with a 25-foot 3-pointer. And Fox then draining another deep 3.

It was the Floyd brothers, Colin and Ryan, going 1-on-1 a couple of times. It was Stuckey, Boston Celtic Brian Scalabrine and ex-Bulldog Mike Nilson diving for a loose ball, one of the few times defense took priority.

It was five members of GU's 1999 Elite Eight squad on the floor at the same time.

It was ex-Zag Richie Frahm, who will play in China this winter, still burying jump shots and adding a few impressive dunks. It was Stuckey smoothly rising for a two-handed jam. It was another loud ovation from the crowd with the introduction of David Pendergraft, the most recent Gonzaga graduate to participate in the contest.

It was Scalabrine toweling off the shoes and then the head of one of the refs.

And perhaps the biggest surprise of all, it was Casey Calvary lacing up the high-tops again. It was his first time playing in the fourth annual charity game, which was missing regulars Dan Dickau and Adam Morrison, both absent because of commitments to their pro teams.

"I'm getting on in years (29) and I've played a lot of basketball," said Calvary, who has retired after a lengthy career overseas. "I've had lots of two-a-days, so I have to be careful with what I do. To support a good cause in the Spokane community I'm happy to do it."

He got a win to boot, although it was made more difficult when the Blue team's 24-point lead at the end of the third was wiped out by a few clicks at the scorer's table. Calvary tried to rectify the situation by switching the score back, but it didn't last.

So the Blue had to work for it, especially after Stuckey sparked the White with four 3-pointers in the final quarter.

"It was fun to come out and put on a show for the fans," Stuckey said.

Stuckey's two free throws gave the White a 141-140 lead with 1.5 seconds left, but Scalabrine assumed coaching duties and diagrammed a play, borrowing a reporter's notebook to do so. Santangelo fired an inbounds pass to an open Calvary for a dunk to decide it.

"My first win (in four tries)," said Frahm, who had 18 points in the first half and didn't slow down in the second. "Casey just lives down the road, but for a lot of different reasons with contracts and playing overseas, he couldn't play in this game. He's retired now, but the way he looked tonight I don't think he should be retired. That was a good way to end it and I think the fans enjoyed it."

So did the players.

"It was really fun with the way the teams were separated with me, (Ryan) Floyd, Nilson, Richie and Casey," Santangelo said. "And it's always great fun to play with Scalabrine because he's just a winner. It was a lot of fun down on our side. For the guys we had here, all us old guys, it was great the people came out to support us."

Dan Dickau signs with Italian Team

It was announced Tuesday that former Gonzaga All-American guard Dan Dickau became the latest NBA player to agree to join a foreign team when he reached a deal with the Euroleague team Avellino.

By signing with the Italian team, Dickau is the ninth player who held a job in the NBA last campaign to defect to a foreign club this offseason joining former Orlando Magic guard Carlos Arroyo, Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Childress, Toronto Raptors guard Carlos Delfino and forwards Jorge Garbajosa and Primoz Brezec, Juan Carlos Navarro of the Memphis Grizzlies and New Jersey Nets teammates Bostjan Nachbar and Nenad Krstic overseas.

"Our aim was to find a player that could make a difference and dictate the tempo of our team," Avellino club president Vincenzo Ercolino told Euroleague.net. "He is a serious professional with NBA experience. We have nothing to envy of any other playmaker that arrived in Italy this year."

While Dan is excited for this new opportunity for his career and his family, he regrets to announce that he will have to miss his annual poker tournament and charity basketball game.  He must report to Italy right away to join his new club and prepare for the upcoming season.

Dan and his family have put a lot of hard work into this year’s charity events and want to make sure they go on, despite his absence.  The celebrity poker tournament will still be held at Northern Quest Casino on Wednesday September 3rd with the Spokane All-American's Charity Classic the following evening at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Spokane, Wash. – Northwest Sports & Entertainment Inc. announces the return of the “Northern Quest Casino Spokane All-American’s Charity Classic” featuring Dan Dickau and Adam Morrison. This will be the fourth consecutive summer classic featuring current NBA Players with former Gonzaga alumni playing together in an event to raise money for Spokane area charities.

The NBA approved event has become a summer highlight for basketball fans in the northwest. The Classic provides a great opportunity to meet some great players and watch an exciting basketball game designed to entertain and raise money for charity. The Charity Classic concludes an entertaining week in Spokane that also features the Celebrity Poker Tournament held on September 3rd at Northern Quest Casino and the infamous after party following the game.

Last year’s Charity Classic featured a thrilling finish as Dan Dickau, his former Gonzaga roommate Kyle Bankhead and Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger combined to ignite a fourth-quarter rally as Dickau's White team edged Adam Morrison and the Red Team 143-140.

Dickau scored 39 points, including a clutch 3-pointer with 12.1 seconds that gave the Red team a four-point lead. He also tallied 16 assists to earn MVP honors.

Players from past Charity Classic games have included NBA players: Dan Dickau, Adam Morrison, Kyle Korver, Jason Terry, Luke Ridnour, Richie Frahm, Danny Granger, and Fred Jones. The game has also featured numerous Gonzaga Alumni including Blake Stepp, Richard Fox, Errol Knight and many others. Participants in this year’s game will be announced later this summer.

Host, Dan Dickau, the former Gonzaga 1st team All-American and current Los Angeles Clippers Point Guard, is coming off his most successful NBA season since he averaged 13.2 points per game for the New Orleans Hornets in 2004-05. The Free Agent, Dickau shot a career high 41.9% from the field and averaged an exceptional 3.1 assist to turnover ratio. The high point of the 2007-08 season came on March 5th as Dickau totaled 20 points, 4 assist and 4 rebounds in a 116-109 win in Los Angeles over Sacramento.

Morrison, the third overall pick in the 2006 NBA draft, was the top scorer in college basketball two seasons ago with Gonzaga. Adam is again expected to be in attendance, but doubtful the Bobcats will allow the 3rd year NBA player to participate in the game. Adam is still recovering from a torn ligament in his left knee suffered playing the Los Angeles Lakers in a preseason game last October.
